SEO Q & A | Business 2 Community

Whilst i?m very focused on writing about social media for obvious reasons, the growing importance of social media as part of the ?signals? which your dictate websites search results means i?ve spent the last couple of months learning much more about SEO. Both from a personal and professional stand-point. So the following is a Q & A with Dave Cain, an SEO expert with over 10 years industry experience based in Nottingham. The nature of the industry means there are millions describing themselves as just that, but from my communications with him, from reading his website and of course the answers below, it?s safe to say he knows his stuff! Enjoy.

Dave, please tell us a little bit about yourself and how you found yourself working in SEO?

Hi Paul, in a nutshell I?m a digital marketer, my core skill set is search engine optimisation (SEO), pay per click (PPC), search engine reputation management (SERM) and conversion rate optimisation (CRO). Along with this I also plan and implement social strategies (which is now an important part of SEO), dabble with web design, WordPress and front end development. I?m certainly not a jack of all and my primary skill is SEO, but I think to be a good search marketer, knowledge and a good understanding is crucial. How I got into SEO; basically to cut a very long story short, I originally wanted to be a web designer, but my flare for design wasn?t good enough, so I looked at other online avenues and found search back in the days of Yahoo, Alta Vista, MSN and a young Google.

SEO has been a growing industry for many years now, there are now thousands of freelancers, companies and agencies all offering services. What separates the good from the bad and what should we be looking for in a reputable SEO provider?

I think results speak for themselves, that is what SEO is all about. If I was a customer looking for SEO I want to see a mixture of local, national and competitive phrases within the agencies or freelancers portfolio.

You and I understand what SEO is all about, but to many it?s still regarded as a dark art, transparency and honesty is a must, is the agency or freelancer willing to share there techniques? Also look at price, does it seem to cheap, ask yourself ?what would you do for ?20 a month?? Like they say, you get what you pay for.

With the recent Google ?Penguin update (ill add your link here) what changes should web masters be aware of that may affect their rankings?

To be honest, the changes aren?t new, Google has always told us about cloaking, buying links, mirroring sites, etc, they have just done another clean up and made the playing field a little more even. If you adhere to there search guidelines, you can?t go wrong.

Social media seems to be playing a larger role in SEO these days, what advice would you give business owners who want to optimize their social media profiles for SEO purposes?

Focus your profile at the user, make it helpful and friendly ? don?t stuff your social profiles or persona?s with keywords and crappy content, make everything unique and relevant to you.

For the most part, social media links are ?do-follow? yet they show up in search results regularly. Does it really matter any more whether a link is do follow or no follow?

I?ve done an experiment around this and I found nofollow links from an authority source can be worth more than dofollow links from an average source. I tend not to worry any more if they are ?no? or ?do? follow. The other thing to remember is, if a backlink profile consisted of all dofollow links, would this look natural to Google? Probably not.

What are the three biggest made by webmasters in trying to rank their websites for their chosen keywords?

Great question;

1. Stuffing the META keywords tag with more and more keywords ? come on this is so 2001!

2. Adding the primary keyword more within the content, so keyword stuffing in a nutshell.

3. Buying links ? in 10 years of being in search I have never purchased a link, saying that? if you do want to buy a worthwhile link, get it from the Yahoo Directory, it will cost $299 a year, but Google sees this as trusted and authoritative link.

8. Where do you see SEO as an industry in the next 5 years. What do you believe will form the basis of search rankings?

Personally I believe there will always be a need and demand for a search engine and in-turn SEO. Whilst getting recommendations from friends and colleagues on social networks is great, there?s nothing better than looking for yourself and ?Googling it?. What search engines will look like in 5 years, I?m not sure, possibly more social and personalisation but I believe the 10 blue links we see today will remain. In terms of rankings factors, I think social will be the driving force, hopefully video will play a bigger part some how and the more traditional link building methods we use today will be gone.

There has been a lot of talk of Facebook launching their own search engine, and with recent rumors that Microsoft may be willing to swap Bing in return for shares in the social network once the IPO has taken place next week, could Facebook genuinely challenge the dominance of Google?

Another great question, its difficult to see what Facebook will do next to be honest, like Google, they will have shareholders to please and more money to make. You?ve then got to ask yourself how are they going to do this without ruining the whole Facebook experience and cramming it with paid adverts. I really can?t see Facebook creating there own search engine, it will be more based around likes, shares, friends, recommendations, location, relationships and so on. It will probably be a different animal to a typical search engine as we know it, and with all this in mind I struggle to see how anyone could take on Google, especially with their search dominance.

Finally, I just wanted to say thank you to Dave for taking the time to answers questions about search engine optimisation. You can read more about Dave and the services he provides here.

Here are some good tools to have on hand: a full chisel set, rubber mallet, metric ratchet set, step ladder, handyman belt and/or tool bag. While you may not use each item every day, it certainly helps to have one when the time comes.

A way you can rid yourself from insects is to caulk holes and cracks. Simply apply caulk to baseboards, around and inside windows, and any other places. When the caulk is dry, insects will have difficulty entering and air will have difficulty getting out.

Make the windows more efficient in the house. Whether you install replacement windows or glaze your existing windows, it will save you money. Look to windows that are double glazed. Double glazed windows are not exactly cheap, but they have the benefit of reducing heat loss. Installing new windows can also make your home more secure. You can always repaint your current window frames if you cannot afford new ones, this can increase your home?s look, as well.

A central heating/air conditioning system that was installed in your home more than seven years ago may be ripe for replacement, even if it?s functioning properly. Replacing central air and heat can reduce the consumption of electricity by as much as 20 percent. Additionally, a new system is quite a bit quieter than an old one.

Always follow proper safety precautions. For example, hardhats protect you in the event of an accident. Goggles, a breathing apparatus, and a hardhat can keep you safe from harm while you are engaged in a home improvement project.

If you want an easy project that brings great returns, replace your old wood front door with a steel one. Research shows that homeowners who replace their front doors with a steel one, got more than they spent when they resold the house. In addition to the protection a steel door offers, a steel door helps make your home energy efficient, as well as adding to the curb appeal of your home.

You do not always need to rely on store-bought art pieces to dress up walls; instead, look for interesting and unusual wall hangings such as three-dimensional tiles. If you use tiles in a few different colors and arrange them in a creative way on the wall, it will add some unusual artwork!

Before you undertake any major home improvement project, it is in your best interest to create a well-laid plan. After you have started the project, you?ll be free to focus on what it takes to accomplish it rather than elements of design. There are many venues in which you can get inspiration including your friends? homes, magazines, television and even home

Situation of Real estate foreclosures for Real-estate Marketplace

For more than a few years the nation?s housing marketplace is filled with property foreclosures that have hurt the prices associated with real estate property throughout the country. Boise is likewise witnessing serious changes because of foreclosures Boise. The vast majority of home buyers would like to see an end to this particular disorder and would like balance as well as saneness prevail. But no one could estimate the actual time necessary for financial recovery. One can only watch out for hints that suggest that recovery of marketplace is going to happen.

For housing market, lack of employment is actually a silent killer. Individuals lose all of their worthy belongings after the loss of a job if they don?t get a new job soon afterwards. Housing sector continues to be besieged in search of solidarity regardless of extremely low interest rates and the government?s incentives to offer house purchaser tax relief.

Banking companies making the effort to help the loyal mortgage seekers who are losing their properties with revised loan programs as well as some other options. Yet when the people do not make a sufficient amount of, having to pay through even modified bank loan programs becomes troublesome for them. Hence, this can lead to a Boise foreclosure. Housing rehabilitation does not seem possible until finally the time lack of employment becomes under 6% nationwide. Government is trying to make policies to overcome joblessness rate. But current environment doesn?t seem pretty positive and we can wish for a steady progress in employment market.

The downward tendency of stock trading also has a negative role for real-estate industry. For fixing as well as spinning cash, people were making use of cash from their IRAs to get home during the peak stock exchange times. With the slipping market index, the liquidity isn?t accessible for this particular purpose any longer. Housing market is likely to remain unpredictable and low till the stock market accomplishes a mark of 11,000 points.

Though real estate property recovery and financial stability wouldn?t take place in sometime, there are actually many options for affected house owners. For example, a home owner may select short selling of their property or home instead of opting for foreclosure. This can provide some relief to credit ranking of the real-estate owner. You can keep the personal problems at bay by keeping these considerations in your mind. For serious customers, this is probably the right time to invest in real-estate as the property prices reach their bottom. If you?re a prospective buyer, then you have a plethora of alternatives available in this particular market.

‘Butcher of Bosnia’ genocide trial halted over errors

The judge in Ratko Mladic’s war crimes trial on Thursday indefinitely delayed the presentation of evidence due to “errors” by prosecutors in disclosing evidence to defense lawyers ? a ruling that throws the future of the trial into question.

Presiding judge Alphons Orie said he was delaying the Yugoslav war crimes tribunal case due to “significant disclosure errors” by prosecutors, who are obliged to share all their evidence with Mladic’s defense team.

He said judges are still analyzing the “scope and full impact” of the error and aim to establish a new starting date “as soon as possible.” The presentation of evidence was supposed to begin later this month.

Prosecutors already had admitted the errors and did not object to the delay. Mladic’s attorney has asked for a six-month delay.

Earlier, prosecutors wrapped up their opening statement in the trial by recounting in painstaking and chilling detail the systematic murder by Bosnian Serb forces commanded by Mladic of thousands of Muslim men and boys in Bosnia’s Srebrenica enclave in July 1995, Europe’s worst massacre since World War II.

Exact numbers of the Srebrenica massacre range from 7,000 to 8,000.

“In a period of only five days, from July 12-16, 1995, the armed forces of (Bosnian Serb leader) Radovan Karadzic and Ratko Mladic expelled the civilian population of Srebrenica and murdered over 7,000 Srebrenica men and boys,” McCloskey said.

Mladic’s army “carried out their murderous orders with … dedication and military efficiency,” he added.

Mladic, the 70-year-old former commander of the Bosnian Serb army, showed no emotion on the second day of his genocide trial as prosecutor Peter McCloskey showed judges a fleeting video of what he said were the bodies executed Muslim men piled in front of a bullet-riddled wall.

On the first day of the trial Wednesday, the court’s public gallery was crowded with relatives of the slain men who angrily exchanged hand gestures with Mladic through the bulletproof glass screen separating them.

On Thursday, most of the survivors had left and videos showing a bullish Mladic strutting through the deserted streets of Srebrenica and berating the commander of Dutch U.N. peacekeepers were greeted largely with silence and occasional murmurs.

One woman, Hatidza Mehmedovic, wept in the court’s lobby during a break in the proceedings.

“I buried both of my sons and my husband. Now I live alone with memories of my children,” she said. “I would never wish even Mladic to go through what I go through. Not Mladic or Karadzic. Let God judge them.”

Mladic is accused of commanding Bosnian Serb troops who waged a campaign of murder and persecution to drive Muslims and Croats out of territory they considered part of Serbia. His troops rained shells and snipers’ bullets down on civilians in the 44-month-long siege of the Bosnian capital, Sarajevo.

He has refused to enter pleas, but denies wrongdoing. If convicted, he faces a maximum sentence of life imprisonment.

The first witness is scheduled to testify July 29, although that may be delayed due to problems with prosecutors disclosing evidence to Mladic’s lawyers.

Mladic fled into hiding after the war and spent 15 years as a fugitive before international pressure on Serbia led to his arrest last year. Now he is held in a one-man cell in a special international wing of a Dutch jail.

But the fact that he is jailed and on trial is seen as another victory for international justice and hailed by observers as evidence that ? more often than not ? war crimes tribunals get their indicted suspects, even if they have to wait for years.

McCloskey outlined how, after overrunning Srebrenica, Mladic’s forces summoned buses and trucks from across Bosnia to transport women and girls out of the enclave and to move captured men to schools and other public buildings. The men were then driven to remote execution locations and gunned down by firing squads and their bodies were plowed into mass graves.

McCloskey said so far the remains ? sometimes no more than a couple of bones ? of 5,977 victims have been exhumed. He showed photographs of an exposed mass grave to underscore to judges that the victims were not war casualties.

One photo showed a skull, its teeth exposed in an apparent grimace, and its eyes covered by a blindfold. Another gruesome photo showed a pair of hands bound with a strip of cloth behind a body’s back.

Be Smart About Electronic Communications – Diagnostic Imaging

More and more, I hear about colleagues communicating via electronic media about patients. Almost daily, I am asked to communicate with referring physicians about their patients outside the normal report. That trend was confirmed when I read an article about PACS systems that allow SMS or other rapid digital communication beyond the typical PACS or RIS log in.

Certainly such efficiencies of communication are the wave of the future, even present. They will allow physicians to seamlessly share critical results and will reduce time spent tracking down other physicians or results. This means that tools for sharing information are very powerful for radiologists. In addition, as a profession predicated on a visual format, radiology lends itself to electronic media and sharing of information.

Beyond direct patient care, many professional friends share cases and to ask for opinions. But that kind of communication has its limitation and dangers. While recent articles talk about leveraging new tools for this, other publications have warned of abuses of the technology, either through inadvertent or inappropriate interactions.

Amongst the tools, social networking is one of the most powerful. Several sites intended just for physicians now exist and can be good places to share experiences. But any information shared there must be completely anonymous. Remember too, that you are still legally responsible for the content you post.

Beyond that, realize that there is not a way to verify that the persons using this are health professionals so be careful in trusting information you get there. That works both ways as what you share can be disseminated to and attributed to you. And lastly, realize anything you say can be used against you. Patients can see what you post or share too, so always be professional. That goes for all interactions in the electronic space.

A few more comments:

Try not to mix personal and professional anything ? blogs, social networking, cell phone, if at all possible. For example, if you have professional Facebook account for the office, keep the content for patients only. If patients try to contact you this way, refer them to your office and have them call or come in for advice. Avoid the temptation to have any personal contact with any patients. Keep it professional. Once you start a doctor-patient relationship in the office or even online, the relationship is that forever, so be careful.

Remember email is not secure unless accessed under a secure network, so sharing patient information is dangerous. That image of the interesting case that you sent out for your colleagues to give you an opinion has patient data on it. And the photo of your procedure from yesterday that you posted shows the patient?s face. That sort of problem is easy to miss ? and may cost you.

Texting may be even more problematic. You can?t validate who picks up the phone that the surgeon lays down in the OR, and SMS is not a secure medium. So if you don?t have a secure cell network, make sure you share this way very carefully. At a minimum verify that the receiver wants information this way and that it is private before you send it. And never add any editorial information.

NASA Counts 4,700 Potentially Hazardous Near-Earth Asteroids

It always puzzles me how people invent all sorts of imaginary flaws in markets. For example, I got into this long argument [slashdot.org] with someone who was claiming that “free markets” created class structures and an exploited class on the bottom, but ignoring that both societies do that just fine on their own and markets actually help reduce such stratification. It’s nonsense, but of a sort that’s fairly pervasive in society.

This complaint above is however of the biggest legitimate flaw of a market. Namely, if it doesn’t trade on the market, it doesn’t exist in the viewpoint of traders on the market. While there are (as I gather) a few businesses which can and do legitimately offer insurance or whatnot against asteroid impacts, the cost of such insurance is way out of line with the risk.

It’s much cheaper at this time to self-insure, that is, use your own resources to prepare against such low probability events.
